Sacred Sites of the Divine Feminine

Revelation 12:1 A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

Sacred sites of the divine feminine, with various images and symbols representing motherly guidance and compassion, can be found throughout history and around the world. Ancient female deities, from Goddess Isis in Egypt and Guanyin in East Asia to Tonantzin of the Nahuatl people of Mexico, have been called upon for maternal blessings for thousands of years.

Mary and Goddess Isis

In modern times, Mary has been honored as ‘Queen of Heaven’ by Christianity, a dominant global religion for over two thousand years — yet her legend may be much older than known history. The goddess Isis, known as the “Goddess of Ten Thousand Names,” is the oldest known historical deity, and is still worshiped globally by pagans, various spiritual traditions and interfaith religions.

There are many similarities between the most important Egyptian goddess, Isis, and the legends of Mary, an amalgamation of Mary the partner and lead disciple of Jesus and Mary the mother of Jesus. Both Isis and Mary were referred to as the “Lady of Light.” Isis’ son Horus and Mary’s son Jesus, were conceived without sexual contact and rose from the dead after three days. Horus was referred to as the “god of light” in Egypt, while Jesus is known as the “light of the world.” Isis is depicted with a solar disk and Mary with a halo, and both are often depicted holding their infant son.

The Divine Feminine and Colonization

The Seated Woman of Çatalhöyük, Turkey, 6000 BC.

Throughout the establishment of patriarchal societies over more than five thousand years, many ancient sacred sites where female deities were honored were rededicated in the name of Mary during patriarchal colonization. The Old Testament makes the mere possession of a goddess statue a serious sin, and a violation of the ‘first commandment.’ Sacred sites around the world dedicated to goddesses were transitioned to become sacred sites to Mary, other religious icons or simply lost to history.

Maternal figurines make up much of the ancient archeological relics dated 20,000 or more years old, indicating that most ancient people venerated a motherly divine. Tens of thousands of these ancient relics have been discovered. It is no wonder they were buried when their possession was deemed a criminal sin.
